Your present position is LAT 41° 05.5' N, LONG 72° 38.0'W. Assuming there is no set and drift, what course must you steer per standard magnetic compass (psc) to arrive at a position 3 miles due north of Horton Point Light?
Select one:
a. 077° psc
b. 090° psc IncorrectIncorrect, return to study material for correct answer.
c. 081° psc
d. 085° psc

AND

Your present position is LAT 41° 05.5' N, LONG 72° 38.0" W. Assuming that there is no set and drift, what course must you steer per standard magnetic compass (psc) to arrive at a position 2 miles due west of Twenty-Eight Foot Shoal Lighted Buoy (LAT 41° 09.3' N, LONG 72° 30.5' W)?
Select one:
a. 060° psc IncorrectIncorrect, return to study material for correct answer.
b. 055° psc
c. 065° psc
d. 235° psc

DEVIATION IS NOT GIVEN, SO HOW CAN I DO THE TVMDC TO ARRIVE AT STANDARD COMPASS?
ALSO, AM I EXPECTED TO USE THE LAT AND LONG GIVEN, OR PLOT 2mi DUE WEST OF THAT LOCATION?

NEXT PROBLEM: I AM ALSO TAKING THE MASTER UPGRADE EXAM TOMORROW, BUT I JUST REALIZED THAT I DON'T HAVE ANY PRINTED MANUALS FOR THAT COURSE?
I AM TAKING OUPV, SAILING, AND MASTERS TOMORROW. EACH IS GRADED SEPARATELY, RIGHT?
SO, IF I FAIL THE MASTERS (because I don't have the manuals), BUT PASS THE OTHER TWO, I CAN JUST RETAKE THE MASTERS?

IT WOULD BE BEST IF YOU CALLED MY CELL PHONE ASAP - 601-467-1676

THANK YOU,

TOM

Tom:
The Deviation table can be found in the online course as well as the Navigation for the Mariner study guide on page 109. The upgrade study guides are the Seamanship for the Mariner and Maritime Law for Inspected Passenger Vessels. They are also contained within the Upgrade online course. The OUPV, Upgrade and Sail are separate tests. If you do not pass any sections, you will only need to retake those sections as long as you are within your 1 year timeline. You can only take any one section a total of 3 times.

For this question it is a simple point a to point b type question which does not require the use of a tvmdc table.. You find position a then position b, draw a course line, then use you parallels set them up on the course line. Now carefully walk them over to the closest compass rose and read the inner ring since the problem is asking for psc.

BOTH of the questions were of the same nature, and I plotted the A to B course, moved to the compass rose and determined the course. For the first one, I answered 90 degrees, as I determined 91 was my course and 90 was closest. That was marked WRONG!

For the second, I adjusted 14W from the variation and picked the closest answer, and got it right.

I re-plotted both questions a dozen times and got the same course within one degree every time. I don't see how I can be doing it wrong if I am getting all of the other questions right every time.

Not very excited about taking the proctored final at 10am (EST) tomorrow (Saturday).
