Magnetic Compass

Denny Orewiler Dec 06, 2017 12:52PM EST

In the Magnetic Compass chapter in the book, question 10 on page 70 is as follows:

Magnetic compass deviation__________________
A. varies depending upon the bearing used
B. is the angular difference between magnetic north and compass north
C. is published on the compass rose on most nautical charts
D. is the angular difference between geographic and magnetic medians.

I answered A. The correct answer is B.

I get that the compass reading difference between magnetic and compass is affected by deviation, but it can also vary depending on heading. Is the fact that A has the term bearing instead of heading where I have answered incorrectly?

There is a difference between bearing and heading. A bearing is a direction to a specific point or object where a heading is the direction of the vessel. So, “A” has nothing to do at all with deviation.
